Clean Energy Community

NYSERDA-logo-10-8-12-300x84The mission of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, known as NYSERDA, is to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources across New York State. Building a more sustainable New York starts with building more sustainable communities.

The initiative known as Clean Energy Communities is one of NYSERDA’s programs that looks to educate and facilitate local communities in promoting renewable energy sources.

Centre Island has pledged to use the Clean Energy Communities program to implement clean energy actions, save energy costs, and improve the environment.

On June 9, 2017, the Village earned the Clean Energy Community designation by completing 4 out of 10  “High Impact Actions“.

Centre Island has completed the following  “High Impact Actions“:

  • Benchmarking – The Village adopted a policy to report energy use by posting Energy Costs and Usage on its website.
  • Energy Code Enforcement Training – Train the Building Inspector in energy code best practices.
  • Clean Fleets – Install electric vehicle charging stations or deploy alternative fuel vehicles. The Village will have 2 Level 2 charging stations at the Village Hall.

By being a designated Clean Energy Community, the Village of Centre Island qualified for a $50,000 grant to fund additional clean energy actions.  The Village applied to install insulated garage doors and solar roof tiles at its Village Hall.
